Speedskating women’s sprinter Kim Min-sun (Uijeongbu City Hall) set a track record and won gold at the sixth edition of the 2023-2024 International Ice Skating Union (ISU) World Cup.
Kim crossed the finish line in 37.69 seconds in the first race of the women’s 500-meter Division A on Thursday in Quebec City, Canada.
Kim’s first-place finish in her main event, the 500 meters, was her third in as many World Cups this season. She has now collected seven consecutive medals since winning bronze in the second race of the women’s 500 meters at the second World Cup in November last year.
Kim, who added 60 ranking points with her win, remains in second place with 460 points. She trails leader Erin Jackson (USA), who has 474 points.
Pemke Kok (NED – 37.70) was second, just 0.01 seconds behind Kim, followed by Tian Luning (CHN) in third with a time of 38.05.
Ina Hyun (KOR), who competed alongside Kim, finished 13th in 38.72.
After her victory, Kim said, “I’m proud to have won this event, and more importantly, I’m happy with my performance because I think I’m getting better and better before the World Championships. I will do my best to show my best in the upcoming competitions,” said Kim.
Competing in the men’s mass start on the same day, Jung Jae-won (Uijeongbu City Hall) clocked 7:56.11 to finish second. He was 0.05 seconds behind first-place Shomu Sasaki (JPN – 7:56.06).
After winning silver at the fourth World Cup and gold at the fifth, Jung won his third consecutive medal with a silver at the sixth.
His teammate, veteran Lee Seung-hoon (Alpensia), finished eighth.
“I’m happy to have won a medal at the sixth World Cup after the fourth and fifth World Cups. In the first race of the men’s speedskating 500 meters, Kim Jun-ho (Gangwon Provincial Office) finished eighth in 34.99 seconds and Cho Sang-hyuk (SportsToken) was 14th in 35.16 seconds.
The women’s team sprint team of Park Chae-eun (Korea Gymnastics University), Kim Min-ji (Seoul General) and Kang Soo-min (Korea University) finished in sixth place with a time of 1:31.56.
