The Korea Cup has seen an upset. Jinju Min Football Club of the K4 League, which failed to win promotion to the K3 League last year after losing in the promotion decider, has beaten K League 2 Chungnam Asan Football Club to advance to the third round.
Jinju Min Football Club defeated Chungnam Asan 1-0 in the second round of the 2024 Hana Bank Korea Cup on March 23. After defending a 37th-minute goal by captain Gong Gong-hoon to secure the victory, Jinju Minsan will advance to the third round to face 스포츠토토 Daejeon Hana Citizen.
Earlier, 16 matches of the second round of the 2024 Korea Cup were played over 23 and 24 days. As a result, 12 teams from the K League 2, three teams from the K League 3 and one team from the K League 4 advanced to the third round. The third round of the Korea Cup, which will feature eight K League 1 teams, including the four Asian Champions League qualifiers from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), will be held next month on Nov. 17.
There were no more upsets. The K5 League teams battled against K2 teams in the second round but failed to break through the professional barrier. Wamsan Players were tied 1-1 until the 29th minute against Gimpo FC, but conceded two goals to fall 1-3. Yangsan Eogok FC also held on to a 0-0 scoreline until the 28th minute of the second half against Cheonan City FC, but conceded four goals in quick succession.
K2 teams won both of their matches against K3 and K4 opponents. Ansan Greeners, FC Anyang, Seongnam FC, Gyeongnam FC, Chungbuk Cheongju, and Jeonnam Dragons earned clean sheet victories, while Suwon Samsung and Bucheon FC also earned 2-1 home wins to join them in the third round.
Seoul E-Land and Busan IPark also advanced to the third round with penalty shootout victories after 120 minutes of extra time. Seoul E-Land will face FC Seoul in the third round for the first time in three years in the Seoul Derby.
