Woo Sang-hyuk finishes 3rd in Diamond League

Zurich qualifies for final with 2m31 for 3rd place and 20 points ‘4th overall’

‘Smile Jumper’ Woo Sang-hyuk (27-Yongin City Hall) has become the first Korean athlete to reach the Diamond League Final.

Woo cleared 2.31 meters to finish third in the men’s high jump at the World Athletics Zurich Diamond League 2023 at the Retzigrund Stadium in Zurich, Switzerland, 섯다 on Monday (July 1).

Woo added six Diamond League ranking points to his total of 20 for the 2023 season, which puts him in fourth place and a ticket to the final, where the top six spots are awarded.

The Diamond League holds a total of 14 tournaments a year, with ranking points earned in 13 of them determining the final standings and the winner of the 14th Final.

The 2023 Diamond League Finals will be held in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on September 16-18.

Woo competed in four of the six competitions in which the men’s high jump was organized this year (Doha, Rome, Florence, Stockholm, Silesia, London and Zurich), earning seven points for second place finishes in Doha (2m27), Rome and Florence (2m30) before adding six points in Zurich to qualify for the final.

Woo missed the final last season by one point.

In the 10-man competition in Zurich, Woo cleared 2m15, 2m20, and 2m24 in the first round.

At 2m28, he failed the first and second periods, but cleared 2m28 in the third period.

On 2m31, Woo missed the first and second periods, but succeeded in the third period.

After failing his first attempt at 2m33, Woo raised the bar to 2m35 after Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar) and Hamish Kerr (New Zealand) both cleared this height in their first attempts.

However, he missed both attempts at 2.35 meters and finished in third place.

In the men’s high jump in Zurich, Barshim took first place with a clearance of 2.35 meters. He finished with 29 ranking points and first overall.

Kerr finished second with a height of 2.33 meters and qualified for the final with 24 ranking points and third place overall.

Jubon Harrison (USA), who did not compete at the event, earned the same 24 points as Kerr, but entered the final with a higher ranking (second) due to his three individual first-place finishes.

Last year’s Diamond League winner, Jean-Marco Tamberi (ITA), finished fourth with a jump of 2.28 meters. He qualified for the final in fifth place (15 points).

Thomas Carmoy (BEL) earned the last ticket to the Final in sixth place (15 points).

The winner of the Diamond League will receive a trophy and $30,000 (approximately $40,000) in prize money.

Meanwhile, Woo will travel to the United States for two days to prepare for the final.

After the Diamond League Finals, 고스톱 he will compete in the Hangzhou Asian Games. The men’s high jump final at the Asian Games will be held on October 4.
