Not the pitcher with 22 major league wins. Jaime Barria (28), a foreign pitcher for the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), had another meltdown. He gave up seven runs on five straight hits, including two home runs. Hanwha’s 10-3 record in its last 13 games has been dampened by the loss.
In his first start of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League 2024 against the Kiwoom Heroes at Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejeon, he allowed seven runs on nine hits (two home runs) in four innings with no walks and four strikeouts. The seven runs were the most allowed in a single game in his KBO debut. With Hanwha trailing 2-7 and facing the loss, Baria’s ERA jumped from 4.53 to 5.31.
Baria was shaky from the start of the first inning, getting Lee Joo-hyung to fly out to shortstop and Lim Byung-wook to fly out to third base for the first two outs in four pitches, but gave up a single to right to Song Sung-moon and a double to center to Choi Joo-hwan. A throwing error by center fielder Jang Jin-hyeok allowed Song to advance to third.
With runners on first and third,
Barria gave up a single to center field to Ko Young-woo, who was then hit by a fastball from Won Sung-joon to load the bases. Hanwha pitching coach Yang Sang-moon took the mound and tried to stem the tide, but it didn’t work. The next batter, Kim Gun-hee, had a two-strike advantage and couldn’t capitalize. He was hit by a five-pitch slider for a double to center field.
Lee struck out Lee Seung-won on a swinging strikeout to end the inning, but two batters later, he gave up three runs on five consecutive hits.
They gave up three runs in the top of the second. 토토사이트 After getting Park Joo-hong to fly out to center, Lee struck out Lee Joo-hyung, but gave up a single to Lim Byung-wook with the bases loaded on a wild pitch. He then gave up a three-run homer to Song Sung-moon on a fastball. A 147-kilometer per hour two-seam fastball that was low and away from the body of the pitch, Song lined it over the right-field fence. It traveled 120 meters and was his 14th home run of the season.
Barria gave up another home run in the top of the third. Won Sung-joon led off with a solo shot. The second pitch, a 134-kilometer-per-hour slider, was high and away. It was a complete miss. It traveled 110 meters, his second home run of the season. Won Sung-joon, who was called up to the first team, followed up his first at-bat with a home run to put Baria away.
In the top of the fourth inning,
He struck out Lee Joo-hyung on a wild pitch and got Lim Byung-wook and Song Sung-moon to ground out to second base, but gave way to reliever Han Seung-ju to start the fifth inning. Totaled 77 pitches, 59 strikes and 18 balls. In addition to his fastball (33), which topped out at 152 mph and averaged 148 mph per Trackman, he used a slider (28), changeup (11) and two-seam (5).
Barria, who has 22 career wins in the major leagues, came to Hanwha in May as a foreign replacement for Felix Peña. He lived up to his name with two wins and a 1.69 ERA in his first three starts, but faltered after giving up four or more runs in three straight games. He rebounded with a 6⅔ inning, three-hit, two walk, three strikeout shutout win over Gochuk Kiwoom on March 10, but has failed to make it past the fifth inning in four of his last five starts.
It’s past time to talk about adjusting to the league.
His monotonous fastball-slider two-pitch, outside-oriented pitching pattern is being analyzed by opponents. He doesn’t have a third pitch, and he doesn’t have a weapon against lefties. His changeup is mediocre and his command isn’t overpowering. His command is shaky at best.
Against Kiermaier, his slider and changeup were hit hard, as they were either in the middle of the zone or high. Seven of his nine hits were to lefties. The slider and changeup accounted for three of those hits. Hanwha’s momentum is in danger of stalling as Barria, who was brought in for the best-of-five series, failed to live up to expectations.
